At the Göteborg Opera, you have the opportunity to get even closer to dance and its dancers. Before each world premiere we open the auditorium for an evening to give you a glimpse of the rehearsal process. At this point the creations are almost – but not fully – ready; the choreographer, rehearsal directors and dancers are in the middle of an intense phase where all the disparate sections are about to merge into a new, unique and unexpected whole.
All performances begin with an optional introduction – verbal and/or physical. Our physical introductions give you the opportunity to come close to and try movements together with dancers from the company, and other guests that are just as curious as you are.
As with all contemporary art, modern dance is in a state of constant flux. The innovative Göteborg Opera is one of very few opera houses in the world to house a contemporary dance company. The art of dance is nurtured here, taking it to new heights, as was confirmed when our company was awarded the Swedish Theatre Critics’ Association’s Dance Prize for 2017.
Today our international reputation is stronger than ever. Every week the company receives requests to open international dance festivals or perform on the leading dance stages of the world. In the 2018/2019 season, GöteborgsOperans Danskompani will tour China, including Macau, open the Torinodanza Festival in Turin, perform at the prestigious Sadler’s Wells in London and visit Madrid, Paris and other European cities. On its international tours, the dance company is a proud ambassador for the city of Gothenburg and the Västra Götaland region.
GöteborgsOperans Danskompani’s repertoire is made up almost exclusively of new works created especially for the company. We bring great artists together and give them the space to create something unique, just for us.
This year’s world premieres on the Main Stage are the results of such encounters. With his new work, globally renowned choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui concludes his acclaimed triptych collaboration with GöteborgsOperans Danskompani in the evening Dust to Dust, which will also include Crystal Pite’s exquisite Solo Echo, an existing work that she chose to have GöteborgsOperans Danskompani perform.
The spring dance premiere will be two glorious creations – by the poetic Marina Mascarell and the explosive Hofesh Shechter. After his first visit to Gothenburg, the latter exclaimed that the company had “the most talented and adaptable group of dancers on the planet; it both excites me and scares me what we might be able to do together”.
January will bring you a new chance to see our greatest successes from last season: Damien Jalet’s Skid, in which the stage is raked at 34°, straight down into the orchestra pit, and Decadance Gothenburg by the legendary Ohad Naharin.
The magnificent season finale will be the Göteborg Opera’s first very own Dance Festival: GöteborgsOperans Danskompani, international guests, concerts, conversations, workshops and, as part of the Göteborg Opera’s Skapa project, a creation by Norwegian choreographer Jo Strømgren, known for his generous, humorous dance theatre.
Embrace your curiosity and experience world-class contemporary dance – in right here Gothenburg.
