Staffan Aspegren

Staffan Aspegren is a theatre, musical and opera director.  

He has worked on all of Sweden’s opera stages, at Göteborgs Stadsteater and Stockholm Stadsteater, in regional theatres and international stages such as the opera houses in Rome, Helsinki and Cape Town, Århus Theatre in Denmark and Den Nationale Scene in Bergen, Norway.  

Staffan directed the opening of The Göteborg Opera, which was broadcast live by Sveriges Television (SVT), and was responsible for the opera repertoire in our first season. 

He has directed works such as West Side StorySweeney ToddAmadeusMadame Butterfly and Macbeth. Staffan was also appointed as Scandinavia’s first professor of musicals by the University of Gothenburg.  

Since 2015, Staffan has been artistic director for theatre at Spira Culture Centre in Jönköping.  
With funding from the Swedish Arts Council, in 2016 Staffan initiated a music platform in collaboration with Östgötateatern and Wermland Opera, with the aim of finding new Swedish musicals using a Broadway-inspired workshop/reading method. 

Camera, a musical about the life of actor Ingrid Bergman written by Aspegren and composer, lyricist and musician Jan-Erik Sääf, premiered at Östgötateatern in 2018 and was first performed in its finished form at Spira Culture Centre in autumn 2020.
