For season 2023/2024, the Göteborg Opera will present the musical Wicked – the story about what really happened in The Land of Oz before Dorothy arrived, presented from the witches’ point of view. The Swedish premiere for this international mega-hit will take place on the Main Stage at the Göteborg Opera in autumn 2023.
The musical Wicked had its world premiere in 2003, and has been a formidable audience-magnet for stages around the world, and has been one of Broadway’s and the West End’s greatest successes of recent decades. The tale is a kind of prequel to the story presented in the 1939 classic film The Wizard of Oz. What was it that changed the girl Elphaba into the notorious Wicked Witch of the West? It presents the story of a close, complicated and unlkely friendship between Elphaba and Glinda – the girl who was later to become the Good Witch of the North.
Wicked was created by the musical-legend Stephen Schwartz (music and lyrics) and Winnie Holzman (book). The story is based on the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West from 1995, written by Gregory Maguire.
Samuel Harjanne will direct this production. Samuel has directed many big musicals in England, Estonia and especially in Finland – from Aladdin and Billy Elliot to Les Misérables, Disney’s The Little Mermaid and Kinky Boots. The conductor and musical director will be Bjorn Dobbelaere, who has also been responsible for many musicals at the Göteborg Opera such as Oliver!, Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Miss Saigon, Cats and The Phantom of the Opera. The set and costume designer is takis, a creator based in London, whose multi-faceted work includes big West End musicals, and other theatrical works in Britain – including opera, ballet and circus.
Wicked was nominated for 10 Tony Awards in 2004 and won three – for Best Costume Design, Best Scenic Design and the Best Actress in a Musical, as well as a Grammy for the Best Musical Show Album in 2005. Wicked is also soon to be a cinematic release, starring Ariana Grande amongst others.
