We work based on a project-oriented approach for efficient implementation of operas, dance performances and musicals, which form the basis of our repertoire. About the role
As our Orchestra Director, you will have fully delegated responsibilities for the orchestra department, including 86 musicians and 3 employees in orchestra services. Your main task will be to provide the overall support required for the Opera’s artistic progress. Together with the assistant orchestra manager, who is mainly responsible for staffing issues, such as the orchestra’s contractual and work environment conditions, you constitute the Orchestra Management Team working with quality assurance of the orchestra’s operation as a whole.
The Orchestra Director’s overall task is to ensure the operation of the orchestra so that the repertoire planned may be accomplished at the highest artistic level. You are expected to drive ongoing development initiatives for the orchestra as a whole as well as for each individual member. In your role as Orchestra Director, you provide artistic support to the Artistic Director Opera/Drama in the repertoire planning process. You are expected to contribute your expertise so that the selected repertoire may be implemented based on the desired artistic, work-environment and financial perspectives. You will also be part of the long-term repertoire/programme planning process based on perspectives on the orchestra’s participation and potential.
The Orchestra Director reports to the Artistic Director Opera/Drama and is a member of the Göteborg Opera’s Artistic Management Group and its Strategic Management Group.
To become successful in your role, you must know and understand the challenges faced by individuals who must be able to perform at the highest artistic level, and who constantly live in a process that is expected to result in collective top performances. Your experience in repertoire planning combined with your responsiveness, communication skills and understanding of artistic processes will be crucial to how you will succeed in this position.
The position involves long-term strategic development and repertoire planning as well as minute planning and close collaboration with individual staff members. Therefore, it is very important that you are flexible, both detail-oriented and able to see the “big picture” and good at communicating and creating a culture of involvement.
Your education should include relevant degree studies and corresponding professional work experience. Leadership training will be considered as a plus. In addition, we are looking for a person with a wide network of national and international contacts.
We expect you to have previous experience of a similar position within the industry, and that you are used to working with repertoire selection and strategic planning for artistic success, and that you have experience of driving development work.
As a leader, you have a coaching approach, while at the same time being clear about what is to be achieved. You must be a good organizer and have the ability, constructively and efficiently, to inform about, communicate and drive quality assurance in order to ensure a proactive approach and a good working environment as part of the support surrounding the orchestra.
