“A timeless opera classic.” Göteborgs-Posten
“A magnificent operatic experience.” Borås Tidning
Puccini’s beloved opera tells the story of the singer Floria Tosca, the artist she loves and the chief of police she detests – a love triangle plotted like a thriller that unfolds over the course of 24 hours.
Tosca is in love with the revolutionary and poet Mario Cavaradossi. He is arrested by brutal chief of police Scarpia, who lusts after Tosca and plans to exploit her love for Cavaradossi in order to have his wicked way. Tosca refuses to play along but the price is high. This destructive power struggle is adorned by arias such as Tosca’s prayer “Vissi d’arte" and Cavaradossi’s emotionally devastating “È lucevan le stelle".
American-Italian director Lorenzo Mariano’s Tosca is a homage to the era of Hollywood film noir. The action takes place in 1930s Italy, a dark and dramatic period marked by Mussolini’s oppressive Fascist regime. This production had its Gothenburg premiere in 2011.
The three leading roles are illuminated by a trio of the Göteborg Opera’s own stars: Carolina Sandgren, Tomas Lind and Mats Persson. Italian conductor Giordano Bellincampi alternates with the Göteborg Opera’s house conductor Aivis Greters.
