Glamour, longing and unforgettable arias. It’s no wonder that this is one of the world’s most beloved operas.

The independent, glorious Violetta lives at the heart of the festivities, where she wishes to remain for as long as she can. There she meets Alfredo and falls in love for the first time – glimpsing a future she never believed possible, and dares to strive for it. But the world will not allow her to forget her past. Alfredo’s father coerces Violetta to renounce her love to save the family’s reputation. By the time Alfredo learns the truth, it is already too late.

Violetta is at once fragile and uncompromising in a society where men claim the right to dictate women’s choices. Verdi’s music captures her inner world with clarity: the freedom that beckons, the longing that propels her forward, and ultimately her inescapable loneliness.

Contemporary touches meet historical elegance in this new production of one of the most loved operas in the repertoire. The costumes have influences from the Baroque, the Italian mafia and carnival. La traviata has been selected for the prestigious Savonlinna Opera Festival in Finland, where it will premiere in summer 2026 performed by the Göteborg Opera’s soloists, chorus and orchestra, before opening the season here in Gothenburg.

”The costumes in Stanley Kubrick’s films Barry Lyndon and Eyes Wide Shut, as well as Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, have been important inspirations for this production. They move freely between historical accuracy and stylised interpretation.” Nika Campisi, costume designer
