After completing his training, Liam Bonthrone joined the Opernstudio at the Bayerische Staatsoper (2022–24), where his roles included Brighella in Ariadne auf Naxos, Pedrillo in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, and a Young Sailor in Tristan und Isolde. He returned as a guest artist in roles such as the Narrator in Orff’s Der Mond and Gaston/Victorin in Die tote Stadt.
In the 2023/24 season, he also performed the role of the Wood Spirit in Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Snow Maiden at the Tiroler Festspiele Erl, and made his debut with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under Sir Simon Rattle as the High Priest of Neptune in Idomeneo. In the 2024/25 season, he made his debut at the Potsdam Winteroper as Rinaldo in Haydn’s Armida, as Count Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen, and as the First Knight of the Grail in a new production of Parsifal at the Glyndebourne Festival. At Glyndebourne, he has also performed Abner, Doeg and the High Priest, and covered the role of Jonathan in the revival of Barrie Kosky’s production of Saul. In the coming season, he will perform Jonathan at Oper Köln. Further upcoming engagements include Pong in Turandot at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
Liam Bonthrone has worked with conductors such as Ivor Bolton, Carlo Rizzi and Jukka-Pekka Saraste, and with directors such as Calixto Bieito, Christof Loy, Dmitri Tcherniakov and Robert Carsen. On the concert platform, he has appeared as tenor soloist in major sacred works including Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and St John Passion, Handel’s Messiah and Samson, Mozart’s Requiem and Mass in C minor, and Haydn’s The Creation. He has also given numerous song recitals, including at Wigmore Hall for the BBC, and has participated in masterclasses led by singers such as Joyce DiDonato, Brigitte Fassbaender and Ian Bostridge. Liam Bonthrone now makes his house debut at the Göteborg Opera.
