Mozart wrote only one true flute concerto, yet it became the most celebrated of them all, its music shimmering with light and animated by inventive grace. Sibelius’s First Symphony, composed in the same year as Finlandia, marked his international breakthrough. From the solitary clarinet at the opening to the storm-driven finale, northern forests and lakes emerge in broad, expansive melodic arcs.
The concert opens with the overture to Gluck’s mythological opera Iphigénie en Tauride. It begins in a calm, idyllic spirit before breaking into turbulence, as Iphigenia and her priestesses pray for deliverance.
In autumn 2026, the Göteborg Opera Orchestra has been invited to appear at the Grosses Festspielhaus in Salzburg with excerpts from From Myth to Nordic Light.
