Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik is a much-loved delight, its playful clarity concealing a near-superhuman perfection. The performance is led by Benjamin Schmid, one of the most distinguished and versatile violinists of our time.
We will then enjoy a selection of Franz Schubert’s best-known songs, arranged for chamber orchestra by Max Reger. Schubert was a master of setting words to music, transforming poetry into sound rich in atmosphere and emotional nuance.
The evening concludes with Korngold’s Violin Concerto. Do you hear echoes of Hollywood soundtracks? Little wonder: it was largely Korngold, along with other émigrés from Europe’s opera houses and concert halls who shaped American film music in the 1930's and 40's. Benjamin Schmid returns as soloist to our stage; with the violin as the music’s guiding voice, he allows Korngold’s score to bloom in full colour.
