Anouar Brissel

Video artist

Anouar Brissel is a self-taught video artist whose work is shaped by a wide range of artistic passions, including drawing and music composition. He brings his vision to life in the world of live performance.

In the field of opera, Brissel has created video scenography for productions such as Gianni Schicchi, L’Elisir d’amore and Don Pasquale over three seasons at the Napa Valley/Maria Manetti Shrem Opera Festival in California, all directed by JR Vesperini. For Une autre histoire de Manon, directed by Claire Manjarrès and performed at the opera houses in Saint-Étienne, Vichy and Massy, Brissel’s video work brings each character’s inner fantasy to life. He also collaborates with illustrator Grégoire Pont and director James Bonas on productions including Snow Queen at Opéra national du Rhin, L’Enfant et les Sortilèges, L’Heure espagnole and Der Mond at Opéra de Lyon. In addition, he created the video design for Ariadne auf Naxos at Theater Magdeburg, in collaboration with James Bonas.

Brissel’s video creations have also featured prominently in the world of dance: at the Grand Théâtre de Genève for the revival of Ravel’s Boléro, choreographed by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Damien Jalet; at the National Ballet of Canada in Toronto for the world premiere of Emma Bovary, choreographed by Helen Pickett and directed by James Bonas; and at Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf for the ballet A Kiss to the World, choreographed by Dominique Dumais. His most recent production was Mary Queen of Scots, choreographed by Sophie Laplane and directed by James Bonas for Scottish Ballet at the Edinburgh International Festival.

His work has also been presented at the Royal Albert Hall during the BBC Proms 2023 and at the Helsinki Music Centre, where Aurora Orchestra performed Le Sacre du printemps under the baton of Nicholas Collon.

Looking ahead, Anouar Brissel continues to explore new creative horizons. Upcoming projects include the ballet Lady Macbeth with Dutch National Ballet in Amsterdam, Mary Queen of Scots with Scottish Ballet and The Sorcerer at the Presidio Theatre in San Francisco.
