Director, set designer and video artist

Florian Schaumberger is a director, set designer, and video artist. He began studying New Media Art in 2010 under Professor Klaus vom Bruch at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich. During this time, he created his first works at the intersection of music videos and holographic video installations, such as Burning Tree, which was presented at the Bayerische Staatsoper’s summer festival. In 2012, he transitioned to the set and costume design program under Professor Katrin Brack. During his studies, he worked on set and costume designs at Stadttheater Konstanz, Residenztheater München, and again at the Bayerische Staatsoper.

After completing his studies, he received engagements as a video artist at Staatstheater Darmstadt, Residenztheater München (The Trojans, directed by Tina Lanik), and Münchner Kammerspiele (8 1/2 Millionen, directed by Alexander Giesche). In 2018 and 2019, he created video work for productions by director Lucia Bihler at Schauspielhaus Wien (The Capital, invited to the Radikal Jung festival in 2019) and Staatstheater Mainz (The Confusions of Young Törless).

In 2020, he collaborated with the Dutch theater collective Wunderbaum and the collective hashtagmonike as a director to create the web series Urlaub in Deutschland for Theaterhaus Jena. That same year, he designed the video elements for Wut (directed by Ersan Mondtag) at Schauspiel Köln. In 2021, he worked on multiple productions as a video artist for director Johan Simons at Schauspielhaus Bochum (Oedipus, Tyrant, Mysteries, and Macbeth, which was invited to Theatertreffen 2024).

At Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg in 2022, he collaborated again with Lucia Bihler to create video designs for Woyzeck. That same year, he was named "Best Emerging Artist: Directing/Video" in the critics' survey by Theater heute magazine for his production Hyper at Münchner Volkstheater.

During the 2024/2025 season, Schaumberger is responsible for set and video design for Nora at Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, premiering on November 9, 2024, directed by Felix Krakau, as well as for the production Kohlhaas (No Limits) at Theater Bremen.
