Magdalena Åberg is a set and costume designer working in theatre, opera and dance. She has worked at several of the Nordic region’s leading performing arts institutions, including the Royal Swedish Opera, Dramaten, Malmö Opera and Folkoperan. She trained at the Dramatic Institute in Stockholm.
In opera, she has designed sets and costumes for La traviata, Aida, Stiffelio, Un ballo in maschera and Idomeneo at the Royal Swedish Opera, as well as Madama Butterfly and Così fan tutte at Opera Hedeland in Denmark. At Malmö Opera she designed sets and costumes for Salome, Eugene Onegin and Circus Days and Nights. Other productions include Norma and Tosca, directed by Eirik Stubø at Folkoperan, and Herr Arne’s Treasure directed by Tobias Theorell.
Åberg has collaborated repeatedly with director Tobias Theorell, including Bortbytingen at Dramaten, where she also designed sets and costumes for productions such as Arv, De oroliga, Det blåser på månen and Påklädaren. At Kulturhuset Stadsteatern in Stockholm she has designed sets and costumes for productions including Monstrens tid, Orosdanser and Three Sisters.
In dance, Åberg has collaborated with Mats Ek on the ballet Julia & Romeo at the Royal Swedish Opera and with Örjan Andersson on Arches of Frost for Compañía Nacional de Danza in Madrid.
