German conductor Michael Balke has earned international recognition for his versatility across a broad operatic and symphonic repertoire. Following his 2022 debut at Munich’s Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, he was appointed Principal Guest Conductor beginning with the 2023/24 season.
Recent operatic highlights include productions in Verona (Salome, Elektra), Semperoper Dresden (Die Zauberflöte), Royal Danish Opera (La bohème), Sofia Opera (Don Carlo), Theater St. Gallen (Il trovatore, Faust, Tosca), and Theater an der Wien (La voix humaine and the world premiere of Gordon Kampe’s Ich bin Vincent). A defining aspect of his work is a commitment to rarely performed repertoire, including operas such as Schreker’s Die Gezeichneten, Schmidt’s Notre Dame, and von Einem’s Der Besuch der alten Dame.
Balke has conducted leading orchestras such as the Munich Radio Orchestra, MDR Leipzig, Vienna Symphony, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Copenhagen Philharmonic, Latvian National Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, Taiwan Philharmonic, Tokyo Philharmonic, and Osaka Philharmonic. He previously served as Deputy GMD at Theater Magdeburg and Principal Guest Conductor at Theater St. Gallen.
His recording of La traviata received two Opus Klassik nominations. Balke studied conducting, piano and chamber music at the Cincinnati Conservatory and Musikhochschule Lübeck.
