The Göteborgrg Opera has an orchestra of 86 musicians, a choir of 46 singers and a soloist ensemble of 24 singers.
We are looking for a conductor early in their career for a time-limited employment as Assistant conductor. This is a fixed-term, full-time position from August 2027 to June 2029. Working hours frequently include evenings and weekends.
Duties
- Assist guest conductors
- When needed lead piano rehearsals, sectional rehearsals and orchestra rehearsals
- Conduct some concerts and performances
Requirements
- Higher education in orchestra conducting or equivalent experience
- Experience of conducting professional ensembles
- Experience working in opera productions
- Good English language skills7
Preferred qualifications
- Trained pianist with the ability to play vocal scores and recitatives
- Very good knowledge in Swedish, Danish or Norwegian
- Knowledge in French, German and/or Italian
Selection
A first selection will be made based on the submitted resume (max 2 pages), cover letter (max 1 page) and video recording of the applicant conducting. The video must show the applicant clearly from the front and be of good sound and video quality and must be provided as a YouTube link (listed or unlisted) in the application. The application deadline is July 26th 2026.
A limited number of applicants will be selected for audition and interview at the Göteborg Opera on 29-30 September 2026.
Repertoire for the first round is:
- Stravinsky: Concerto in E♭, "Dumbarton Oaks"
- Wagner: Siegfried Idyll
Repertoire for rounds 2 and 3 will be sent to the selected applicants in early August 2026.
The Göteborg Opera will provide hotel accommodation 28–30 September for the selected applicants.
